Books for Kids

Books are the magical vehicles with the power to transport one to a happier and more exciting place. There are numerous books for kids available in the market. A person’s imagination flourishes most during childhood. The best way to foster this imagination and contribute to a child’s mental growth is through books. Being a voracious reader myself, I made sure my son was exposed to books right from the birth.

Here’s a round-up of the books for kids that I feel you can absolutely gift your child.

1. Touch-Feel Books for Kids:

Little babies have plenty to discover in this vast world. While words and pictures may catch their attention, they will enjoy exploring textures and colours through touch. Ideal for aiding in mental development, touch-feel books for kids can also be a child’s first toy. Some of my favourites include:

Baby Touch Flip-Flap Books

Usborne Touchy-Feely Books

2. Dr. Seuss Books for Kids:

Dr. Seuss is a unique series that is attractive to children of different age groups. Right from early babyhood to a distracted toddler phase, up to when children start reading themselves; the sing-song rhyming schemes and the flurry of made-up words are sure to grab every child’s attention. My favourites include:

Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?

Green Eggs and Ham

The Cat in the Hat

3. What the Ladybird Heard by Julia Donaldson:

This beautiful book for kids has an interesting storyline that instils important values to children. It also offers fabulous illustrations along with teaching animal sounds to younger ones. With a sound panel located on the side of the book, your child will be enthralled, matching each sound to the corresponding animal. There are other books with a similar concept, but this one is my particular favourite.

4. Good Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown:

This book was first published in 1947 and has really stood the test of time. The author of the book designed and wrote it in a way that would enable most children to wind down their excited brains before bedtime. The cute illustrations and rhyming scheme help in the relaxation process.

5. Amar Chitra Kathas:

For older children who are beginning their reading journey, nothing beats the practicality and attraction of a good graphic novel. The recently revamped Amar Chitra Katha’s are the original picture books with engaging storylines. I remember devouring them in my childhood, which may have contributed to my love of history, pushing me to study it at the University level! Our rich Indian culture and history are best represented in this wonderful series.
