The weather is turning warmer and that only means one thing: “remember to close your windows before you yell at your kids”.
Summer vacations are around the corner, and the mommies’ nightmare has already begun. Long long holidays, kids at home, lazy lie-in, late dining, no baths, water running and kids still in the bed!!!
“The burden of school holiday care falls almost entirely on the shoulders of mothers”
The longer, sunnier days, warmer temperatures and blue skies signal the hardest part of our year. Worried that the kids will be bouncing off the walls in sheer boredom during the school holidays? Or they’ll be glued to cartoons or play stations all summer? Here are some ways to keep them entertained, active and out of trouble.
1. Treasure hunt
The treasure hunt will get children moving and keep them active. It helps develop problem-solving skills and gives them a sense of adventure. The treasures could be simple like a box of crayons or pencil pouches. You can make your own clues and hide them at various places around the house.
2. Home skit
This was the best I tried last year. Give your child and her friend a theme and use materials available at home. Ask them to make up a script and act it out. This not only develops your kid’s confidence and acting skills but also their imagination and their speaking skills.
3. Board Games
Good old-fashioned board games and cards can keep kids busy. Children learn to bond with older and younger siblings, thereby learning to share and play fair.
4. Hide and Seek
No list of indoor games would be complete without Hide and Seek, no would it?
5. Puzzles
Puzzles are all-time favorites. They help the kid with analytical skills.
Exercise those creative, cognitive and problem-solving muscles with a good puzzle. Have your children draw a picture on a sturdy piece of cardboard. Then use a pencil to outline puzzle pieces directly on their drawing. Cut out the pieces with a good pair of scissors, mix them up and get solving.
