A woman after marriage dreams of making a beautiful family. This family gets completed when her bundle of joy arrives in her world. However, many couples fail to enjoy this bliss due to certain medical factors and some unknown reasons. But nowadays technology has proved to be a boon to mankind. In vitro fertilization is the procedure that has been a ray of hope for women and men who have been diagnosed with infertility.

In vitro fertilization – If a woman has a blocked, damaged or absent fallopian tube, or if she is suffering from a very chronic condition of the uterus, such as endometriosis, which comes in the way of her conception, she may opt for IVF treatment. Couples also opt for IVF when conditions such as low sperm count or unexplained infertility among men occur.

IVF known as In Vitro Fertilization is a fertility treatment in which sperms and eggs are combined in a laboratory. The eggs are collected at the point of the maturation and are fertilized in the lab with the husband’s sperms. A few days later, the embryos are transferred to the uterus to initiate the pregnancy. After embryo transfer, the woman may be told to rest for the day and may return to normal activities from the next day. Women who undergo In Vitro Fertilization are generally suggested by their doctors to take daily shots or pills of the hormone progesterone for 8 to 10 weeks after the embryo transfer.

Progesterone is a hormone produced naturally by the ovaries that help thicken the lining of the womb (uterus) which makes it easier for the embryo to implant. About 12 to 14 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is advised after consultation with the doctor.
